Living With And Beyond Cancer

The Sheffield Minor Ailment Scheme is being extended to include people undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment. People affected by cancer will have rapid access to simple remedies to manage their side effects following treatment.

There are approximately 5000 patients in Sheffield at any one time undergoing such therapy.  Weston Park Hospital will be referring suitable patients to their local pharmacist for the management of common side effects which can include sore mouth, digestive problems, skin problems and dry eyes.

People affected by cancer will feel the benefit of:

  • Improved patient experience (quick access, less travelling, better car parking)
  • Care closer to home
  • Reduced visits to secondary care
  • Quick access to medication following treatment
  • Supported self-management

NHS Sheffield CCG is keen to commission clinical services from community pharmacy and, in line with the Five year Forward View, pharmacists now have an opportunity to extend their clinical roles into new areas such as cancer patients undergoing treatment.
